ADVIZER vs. CRESCENT Pt. 1
I, Adamvizer, recently sat down with Crescent Moon of Kill The Vultures to get the "scoop" on what daily life is like for the Cres-Moonster. I hope you enjoy our conversation and please comment below if you have questions you would like to ask.
Over the years, many have asked whether the name Crescent Moon is a reference to Islam, and some have wondered whether there is a new-age component to it. All that aside, are you a spiritual person?
It's hard for me to talk about things I believe "spiritually," and not simply because one might feel vulnerable putting their soul spread-eagle on display, but also because there are no words that completely encompass what I stand for and why (my reaction to a hail storm in May, what my wife's hair smells like in the sun, etc). I do not belong to a religion, but I believe there is a God, if not many. I identify a lot with American Indian philosophy of honoring Mother Earth, our ancestors that went before us, the elements around us that provide food, shelter, and life; Honoring the seasons and trying to obtain a balance with the world around us. It all sounds so very "new agey," but I cannot let similarities limit my ideas of self, god, you, etc. I believe in Karma. I have seen ghosts. I have seen glimpses of past existences. I believe meeting Jimi Hendrix's step-mother "June" at his grave site was a gift from Jimi. I believe in remaining humble, since it is quite hard on the ego to convince yourself that you are "the Man" while cleaning people's toilets.
At the first "official" -ddj-bs show, you could be seen wearing a Batman t-shirt. What became of the t-shirt and what became of Batman?
I wore the shirt several times within a four month time frame, and then I sold it at a garage sale to a kid with downes-syndrome named Eric. He talked me down from three dollars to a quarter. I later saw Eric with the T-shirt on his dog, Mabel.
Batman lives.
What is the best part of being married?
I haven't been married long enough to have perspective on marriage, but I've noticed that I walk with my head higher since I've been married. I'm pretty much the same man I was, however, I used to curl into a ball in the corner and try to come up with the lamest ways to kill myself, on certain "off" days, and now when I'm in my ball, I have someone to wave a peanut butter and honey sandwich (with no crusts) in my face and give me a back rub. This ties into the first question, too, because now that I am married to the woman I fell in love with almost ten years ago, I truly believe that things happen for a reason, there's a science, a balance and a purpose and you just have to embrace it and appreciate it for what it is. I've never felt better, and it's not because I have more money then I used to (because I don't), and it's not because I have more Pez dispensers than I used to (because I still have 34); It's knowing that the person YOU believe was put on the earth for YOU, is here to help you build your towers, fight your fights, and dream your dreams.
What was the most difficult part of making the Kill
The Vultures album?
Knowing that it would result in the death of -ddj-bs.
Describe what a meal with Crescent Moon is like?
Picture graphic, passionate sexual intercourse in your neighbor's swimming pool. Now, erase that image, and picture me sitting at a hand-crafted,stained maplewood table with a puple candle and a fancy napkin tucked into the neck of my Batman t-shirt. Now, picture me consuming heaping spoonfulls of pad thai with peanut sauce and holy basil leaves. The lights are low, and you're wondering how you got here, but now all of the sudden, you're hungry, too... You do not recognise me, the table or the bald accordian player hunched over in the corner, yet you feel oddly compelled to sit and open the can of Schlitz beer conveniently placed on the stained maple wood table in front of you. Wait a minute, why are you opening the can?! You don't drink! Remember your promise? YOU DO NOT DRINK! What would Sarig Say? What would Kenny say? Oh great, you're drinking a warm can of antique beer. Are you proud of yourself? Are you?
I know it's cliche to ask, but what is one musical influence behind YOUR contribution to the Kill The Vultures album that people might not get by listening to it?
I've always had a filter on while writing my verses, but I tried to be as honest as possible to myself, whereas I always had other people in mind while writing for previous albums. One of the curses of the Virgo, is that there is a little Editor sitting in our heads that tells us to keep working, but also tells us that we suck at writing and we have no business holding a pencil, before an idea hits the page. One of the philosophies splattered on the wall while
making the album that we all were trying to honor was to "try to raise the dead," and so I had specific dead relatives in mind while making that record. I was trying to pierce a layer of honesty that was brutal enough and dripping with enough life to speak to people that are physically dead and spiritually in another world.
In closing, I would like to thank you, Adam, for this stimulating exercise. I hope that it has brought us closer together, as it has surely taught me more about myself and Batman. Good day, sir.
